Like all living things, trees are susceptible to disease and pests.  Common insects that pose a threat to Virginia trees as tree pests include the emerald ash borer, hemlock woolly adelgid, and the southern pine beetle.  Identifying these early is important to prevent further damage to your trees.

Emerald Ash Borer

Emerald Ash Borer

The emerald ash beetle (EAB) is an invasive beetle from Asia.  They have killed millions of Ash trees since first identified in the US in 2002.  In fact, the Virginia Department of Forestry estimated that they are the most destructive forest insect in the United States.  It feeds on the tissue of the bark of Ash Trees.  If caught in time, it is possible to save your tree.  Several insecticides are available to treat trees with EAB infestations, however, it is suggested that this is completed by a professional to ensure proper treatment.

Hemlock Woolly Adelgid

Hemlock Woolly Adelgid

The Hemlock Woolly Adelgid is another invasive species from Asia that has been in the US since the 1950s.  Characterized by small, round, white masses that resemble tiny cotton balls, the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid is found on the base of the needles of hemlock tree branches.  Notably, they are only found to infect the hemlock tree and not spruce or pine.

To treat an infestation, two insecticides, Imidacloprid and Dinotefuran, have proven results. Both these insecticides must be applied by a licensed pesticide applicator.

Southern Pine Beetle

Southern Pine Beetle

The Southern Pine Beetle is very common in the southern and southeastern United States. Unlike the two previous pests, the Southern Pine Beetle has been present in the US since at least the 1750s.  They infect trees by burrowing into the bark and creating tunnels in the phloem tissue of the tree into which they lay their eggs.  They also introduce blue-stain fungus into the wood which will eventually inhibit water flow in the tree.

One of the best methods of controlling the spread is prevention.  This is done by thinning out forests with pine trees, as mature trees are more susceptible to infestation.  On the other hand, if you are experiencing an active infestation, a method of control is to cut down the infected trees, as the brood is less likely to survive on the ground due to temperature differences.  Lastly, some insecticides are beneficial in combating an infestation, however, this is often resorted to if you are looking to save particular trees.
