Spring is here and that means your trees are ready to start blooming again! We’re sure you’re just excited as we are to see that beautiful greenery in your yard again. But happy and healthy trees aren’t just a natural result of the changing seasons. There’s a little bit of Spring Tree Care to be done in order to make sure that your trees thrive as the weather starts to heat up.

So we’ve put together this quick and easy Spring Tree Care Checklist to help you get your trees in tip-top shape!

Inspect Trees for Winter Damage

The winter season can be brutal on trees, especially older trees that aren’t as strong as they once were. This step is easy to complete before all the leaves grow back since you’ll be able to see the exposed branches, making it easier to diagnose where your tree has suffered damage.

Keep an eye out for any broken or dangling branches that may require pruning. These are the branches you will want to go after before the leaves begin to grow back – adding another extra layer of weight to the limb. This can result in a hazardous break if not dealt with early on.

Clean up Twigs, Leaves, and Debris

Spring cleaning doesn’t have to just be inside your home. Your landscape could definitely use a little love as well, so this is a great time to tidy up the yard. Pick up fallen sticks and other debris to give your landscape the ability to breathe and soak up the sun.

Pro Tip: Don’t those away those bags of raked leaves just yet! They can be shredded and incorporated back into landscaping beds as an organic soil addition. Your greenery will love it.

Plant Your New Trees & Give Them a Mulch!

Spring is a time of growth. And, while winter is the best time to plant new trees, it’s never too late – especially if you’re transplanting one that has already been growing for a while.

If you are putting a plant in the ground in Spring, it should be as early in the season as possible so that it is able to establish its root system before the summer heat sets in.

Mulching in the Spring is great for new and old trees alike. It works to prevent weed seeds from growing around your trees, adds another layer to keep your soil cool on the hotter days, and soaks up extra moisture that your trees will love! Not to mention mulch always adds a classy look to your landscape!

Give Trees Something to Enjoy – Water & Fertilizer

Coming out of the winter season, your soil lacks the nutrients needed to keep a tree growing strong. So you should take advantage of the spring fertilization period to work those nutrients back into your soil. Not only does this make your trees stronger, but it also helps it prevent against pests and infections which are all too common during the hotter months.

In addition to fertilizer, trees can’t survive without water. So, if your lawn is looking a little dried out, be sure to properly water your trees, especially when the hot sun is beating down on them throughout the day.
